Shortly after being freed from slavery, Ben Carter walked from east Texas to New Orleans to enlist in the 9th Cavalry, a unit for blacks. Posted to the Texas frontier to defend settlers against Indians and outlaws, he has problems coping with the prejudices of the white settlers against black soldiers. Put in charge of a small detachment assigned to protect a white family against marauding Comanche warriors, Ben learns to control himself as he learns to command the other men, and he learns what it is to be a man.
